Transfer NewsBelletti to Chelsea?
Related PlayersAs of yet, there has been no confirmation of this news from either Barça or Chelsea, however, it is believed Chelsea turned their attentions to Belletti, who scored the winning goal for Barça in the 2006 UEFA Champions League final against Arsenal, after their bid for Sevilla's Dani Alves were turned down by the newly crowned Spanish Super Champions. Belletti joined Barça in 2004 from Villarreal as part of the deal which saw José Reina move permanently to Villarreal from Barça after spending a few seasons on loan at El Madrigal. He established himself as Barça's first choice right back after the departure of Michael Reiziger for the first two seasons of his Barcelona career before he then found himself on the bench in the 2006/07 season following the acquisition of World Cup winner Gianluca Zambrotta from Juventus. In his 3 seasons as a Barcelona player, Belletti has won two league titles (2004/05, 2005/06), two Spanish Supercopa's (2005, 2006) and a UEFA Champions League medal (2005/06) as well as a runners up medal in the FIFA Club World Cup (2006). His only goal for the club to date came in the 2006 UEFA Champions League final in Paris when he came on as a second half substitute for Oleguer and scored the winning goal against Arsenal, collecting the ball from a Henrik Larsson reverse pass and putting the ball in between Manuel Almunia's legs in the Arsenal goal and into the back of the net. Belletti's boots from that match are now kept in the FC Barcelona trophy room alongside the 2006 Champions League trophy. Should Belletti actually join Chelsea, he will join them knowing that he has already scored for his new club. In the clash between Barça and Chelsea in 2005 at the Camp Nou (2-1), Belletti actually opened the scoring for Chelsea by scoring an early own goal. |
