NewsThe road to Moscow
FC Barcelona's route the 2008 UEFA Champions League final in Moscow has been decided.
They have drawn German side FC Schalke 04 in the quarter-finals and could face Roma or Manchester United in the semis. The 2006 winners will travel to Germany on Tuesday 1st April for the first leg against the Germans before heading back to the Camp Nou 8 days later on Wednesday 9th April to settle the tie. Barça's reward for beating Schalke will then be a semi-final clash between either English champions Manchester United or the conquerors of Real Madrid, Italians AS Roma. Unfortunately for Barça, the decisive second leg of that semi-final tie will be played away from the Camp Nou. But before thinking about the semi-final, Barça must first deal with Schalke 04. The German side made history by reaching this stage of the competition for the first time ever by knocking out FC Porto on penalties in the last round. They are the lowest ranked side left in the competition along with Turkish side Fenerbahçe. Schalke are currently having a disappointing season in Germany where they are in 5th place - 9 points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Last season they ended the season in second place in the Bundesliga, two points behind champions VfB Stuttgart - a team who Barça beat 0-2 and 3-1 earlier on this season in the Champions League. |
